Ukraine cuts steel output in Oct, retains 13th place in WSA's rating

Ukrainian steelmakers cut steel output by 4.7% in October 2017 year-over-year (y-o-y), to 1.910 million tonnes, while retaining the 13th place in the international steelmakers rating drawn up by the World Steel Association (WSA).

Ukraine reduced steel production by 10.9% in January-October 2017 y-o-y, to 18.048 million tonnes, having risen from 13th to the 12th position in the WSA rating in the 10 months, the Association said.

China retained its top position in October 2017 with 72.4 million tonnes of steel (6.1% up from October 2016). It was followed by Japan (8.97 million tonnes, 1% down), India (8.6 million tonnes, 5.3% up), the United States (7 million tonnes, 12% up), Russia (6.2 million tonnes, 5% up), South Korea (6.2 million tonnes, 4% up), Germany (3.6 million tonnes, 2.7% up), Turkey (3.3 million tonnes, 11.1% up), Brazil (3 million tonnes, 3.9% up), and Italy (2.275 million tonnes, 6.1% up).

China traditionally retained its top position in the ranking in January-October 2017 with 709.5 million tonnes of steel (a 6.1% increase y-o-y).

It was followed by Japan (87.2 million tonnes, 0.2% down), India (84.1 million tonnes, 6.4% up), the United States (68.4 million tonnes, 3.9% up), Russia (60.4 million tonnes, 3% up), South Korea (59.1 million tonnes, 3.7% up), Germany (36.5 million tonnes, 2.7% up), Turkey (31 million tonnes, 13.3% up), Brazil (28.5 million tonnes, 9% up), and Italy (20 million tonnes, 3.1% up).

A total of 66 countries ranked by the WSA boosted steel production by 5.6% in the 10 months of 2017 y-o-y, to 1.411 billion tonnes.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine increased steel output by 5.5% in 2016 against 2015, to 24.2 million tonnes, having kept the tenth place in the international steelmakers rating.

UNIAN memo. Ukraine ranked seventh in the WSA rating 2013 in terms of steel output, having produced 30.4 million tonnes. In 2014, the country slid to the tenth place with a steel output of 27.2 million tonnes. Since 2014, two factors have affected domestic steelmakers' activities: hostilities in Donbas, where more than half of steel production facilities are located, and a decline in world prices of raw materials for metallurgy and finished products. They reduced steelmakers' revenue and toughened competition on world markets, which was most evident in 2015. However, Ukraine managed to keep its tenth position in the industry rating in 2015.
