Rada considering single candidate for top central bank post

To date, First Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakov Smolii is being considered by the Verkhovna Rada as a potential successor to Valeria Gontareva at the helm of the country’s central bank, MP and government representative in Parliament Vadym Denysenko has told reporters, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

According to Mr Denysenko, there is a possibility that the nomination will be voted as early as Thursday, Dec 21.

"I hope that [the issue of appointing a new NBU chief] will finally be resolved, since Gontareva as head of the NBU does nothing good to the national currency, unfortunately," said the MP.

Asked by journalists, who can become the next NBU governor, Denysenko replied: "A single candidate is currently being considered - it is an acting governor [Yakov] Smolii."

The people’s deputy also doubted that Valeria Gontareva would address the parliament with a report.

"I believe she will not come to the parliament to report. I think that it will simply be the election of [NBU] governor," he said.
