Electricity price may again rise in Ukraine

Ukraine's National Energy and Utilities Regulation Commission (NEURC) plans to raise the indicative price of coal by 26% in the structure of the wholesale market price for electricity in 2018, based on which tariffs for end consumers are calculated, according to the justification for the draft decision "On approval of the forecast wholesale market price for 2018" published on the regulator's website.

"The indicative price of coal... is $83.08 per tonne, which is 25.8%, or $16.4 per tonne higher than the indicative price of coal, which was taken into account when revising the forecast wholesale market price for 2017," the document says.

It is also noted that the average price of coal in the European market was at the level of $93 per tonne in November, which is 11.9% more than the value, from which the commission calculates the wholesale market price for 2018.

Referring to the data of the Ministry of Energy and Coal, NEURC forecasts the next year increase in generation of electricity produced at TPPs by 9.6%, to 49.5 billion kWh.

"Now, they want to calculate coal at a price of $20 per tonne more, that is, plus $500 million (UAH 13.5 billion) in 2018," Gerus wrote on Facebook.

Gerus also believes that the increase in the cost of coal will lead to an increase in electricity prices for industry by 10-15%.
