Poroshenko: Ukraine may start buying Russian gas if its price low

"They [Russia] are knocking: Will you take our gas? No, everything is fine here. If it's cheap, if it's fair, not corrupt – then you're welcome," he said amid a working trip to Odesa region on Thursday.

In the past two years, Ukraine has become energy-independent and can choose where to buy gas, he said.

Read alsoUkraine not to pay for gas Russia delivered to occupied DonbasHe also recalled that pending a new year, Ukraine used to have complicated talks with Russia, which accused the Ukrainian side of "stealing gas and being unable to ensure [gas] transit."

"Why did we go to court [the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce] only now? Before that everybody was blaming that [gas] contract, but nobody was going to sue. Because we were dependent. And only decisive actions have helped us win, ensuring our energy independence and fair gas prices for good. This is an important victory," he said.

Poroshenko recalled that NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine had recently managed to reduce the gas price compared to that stipulated in a contract with Russia's Gazprom by $130 per 1,000 cubic meters, by winning a lawsuit at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.
