Sales of electric cars in Ukraine more than double in 2017

Sales of electric cars in Ukraine in 2017 rose by 2.3 times against 2016, to 2,697 units, according to the Ukrautoprom Association's press service.

Used cars accounted for 85% of the total sales on the primary electric car market in 2017, whereas their share in 2016 was 51%, it said.

The Nissan Leaf model was the most popular electric car in Ukraine over the period under review, as some 2,219 car drivers preferred this make in 2017, which was 2.4 times up from 2016.

Read alsoUkrainians buy 82,300 new cars in 2017The BMW i3 model ranked second in terms of sales in 2017, having climbed from the fifth position in 2016. Some 107 Ukrainians bought this electric car in 2017, which was three times more than in 2016.

The Tesla Model S car was third: 73 Tesla cars were sold over the period under review, which was 59% up from 2016.

The Ford Focus model ranked forth, as demand for this brand grew by 5% from 2016, to 59 vehicles.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine intends to increase the share of electric car sales on the domestic car market to 15% before 2020 as part of a program to stimulate the development of the country's electric car market.

What is more, Ukraine in 2018 cancelled value added tax and excise tax on imports of electric cars, having amended the Tax Code of Ukraine and respective legal acts.
