Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal says wage arrears to miners, working at state-run coal mines will be paid off soon.

The comment came during a traditional Q&A session in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on December 4.

"As for miners' wages, the relevant draft law was voted on. On Wednesday, the government made appropriate decisions on the distribution of funds that are to be received from [the national operator of Ukraine's crude oil transport system Ukrtransnafta and [Ukraine's largest oil producer] Ukrnafta. So, UAH 1.4 billion [US$49.5 million], which are provided for the payment of the state[-guaranteed] part of miners' wages, will be paid in the near future, for sure," he said, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

On November 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into laws bills (Nos. 4119 and 4120) providing for a mechanism for settling Ukrnafta's tax debt.

The documents will allow this year to allocate UAH 1.4 billion (US$49.5 million) for the payment of wage arrears to miners, as well as over UAH 8 billion (US$282.7 million) for the Fund for Combating COVID-19.
