Crisis in energy sector: Ukrainian TPPs generate more energy than NPPs in spring, first time on record

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UAA1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The operating capacity of coal-fired thermal power plants on the evening of May 27 exceeded that of nuclear plants, on which restrictions had been imposed at 2,700 MW.

That's according to the power generation schedule of the Unified Energy Grid of Ukraine, Ukrenergo reports.

This is the first time in the history of Ukraine that in the spring-autumn period, TPPs generate more electricity than NPPs.

As UNIAN reported earlier, global changes in Ukraine's electricity market began along with quarantine-start.

Production volumes of nuclear energy, the cheapest generation, went on a steady decline in mid-March, while more expensive thermal energy compensated for the drop in the overall balance.

It was earlier reported that due to the quarantine-related power consumption drop and record-high renewable generation, the government decided to limit the operation of nuclear power plants producing the cheapest electricity in the country at UAH 0.56 per kWh.

Instead, the market is seeing more energy generated at thermal power stations at a price of UAH 1.56 per kWh and renewables under a "green" feed-in tariff of UAH 4-5 per kWh.

The situation was significantly aggravated in mid-April – with the assumption of office by acting energy minister Olha Buslavets, who many say is affiliated with Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, who has, in fact, secured a monopoly in the thermal energy market.
