Cabinet seeks to update Ukraine-EU association deal, remove technical barriers to trade

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine intends to update the existing Association Agreement with the European Union, Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko told EU Ambassador, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas during today's meeting.

"We hope to start updating the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. This issue is especially relevant due to the difficult situation in international trade. Another priority issue for us is the removal of technical barriers to trade with the EU, we are ready to conclude an Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products," Ihor Petrashko said, according to the government press service.

Also, interlocutors discussed issues of public procurement, which could significantly contribute to the growth of Ukrainian output.

The minister has noted Ukraine is currently working on a draft regulation with the rules not contradicting international obligations in the field of procurement, aimed to support localized production amid the global economic crisis.

The European Union remains Ukraine's main trading partner, the ministry's press service recalls.

In 2019, the trade turnover between Ukraine and the EU increased by 5.5% on year, amounting to $45.7 billion, of which exports stood at $20.8 billion. The major importers of Ukrainian products were Poland, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Hungary.
