"Ukraine's goal is to join the European Union's electricity supply system in 2023," Kuleba said. "This means that we must quit Belarus and from the Belarusian system, and from the Russian one, and get fully integrated into the EU system. We are going along this path."

Ukraine's strategy remains unchanged, he said. "We will finally get cut off from the power grids of Belarus and the Russian Federation," he said.

Earlier developments

  • In January 2018, Ukraine's power giant Ukrenergo and Moldova's operator Moldelectrica agreed on plans to synchronize the two countries' power grids with the unified electricity market of the EU countries (the European Network of Transmission System Operators, ENTSO-E).
  • Expanding the ENTSO-E synchronized zone of continental Europe's power grids by adding the power system of Ukraine is a component of ensuring the integration of the Ukrainian electricity market into the internal energy market of the European Union, which already includes 41 system operators and 34 participating countries.
