U.S. open to support development of Ukraine's nuclear industry – Energoatom VP

The United States is open to support the development of the Ukrainian nuclear industry.

This was discussed during a meeting between Vice-President of SE NNEGC Energoatom Herman Haluschenko and U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs Theodore J. Garrish in Washington, D.C., on October 8, Energoatom's press service said on October 9.

"Cooperation between Energoatom and the U.S. Department of Energy is an important element of the effective development of nuclear power in Ukraine. I am absolutely sure that our meeting today is a step towards long and fruitful joint work," Haluschenko said, summing up the negotiations.

• Energoatom is Ukraine's largest electricity producer, accounting for about 50% of the country's overall power output.
• Energoatom is responsible for the safe operation of the country's nuclear power plants.
• Ukraine ranks seventh globally in terms of the installed capacity of its nuclear power generating units. Energoatom operates four nuclear power plants across Ukraine with a total of 15 power generating units, all with eater-cooled water-moderated power (WWER-type) reactors. Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, operating six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW, is Europe's largest.
