Ukraine's Energy Ministry says Ukraine is seeking to quit coal to become climate neutral by 2050.

Deputy Energy Minister for European Integration Yaroslav Demchenkov announced this at a meeting of the Energy and Climate Committee of the Energy Community, the ministry's press service said on Facebook on February 22.

According to him, the committee is working on a roadmap for decarbonization, focusing on three main goals, namely energy efficiency, the development of renewable energy sources, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Why is it important

The three areas are important, as the energy sector accounts for more than two-thirds of harmful emissions and greenhouse gases.

The first draft of an integrated climate and energy plan until 2030 has already been prepared, the press service said. The Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035 will also be revised taking into account climate challenges. The new strategy will be in line with the European Green Deal.

The ministry also says Ukraine is considering the possibility of joining the Powering Past Coal Alliance.

"We are considering two scenarios for quitting coal: the base-case one provides for quitting coal in the energy sector by 2070, and the best-case one – by 2040. It is ideal to do this by 2050. This year is the year of climate neutrality of the European continent," it said.

The ministry says that stopping consuming coal is an important part of Ukraine's carbon-free strategy, but it requires an inclusive and equitable transformation of coal regions.

Previous developments

  • Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko said that it was quite realistic for Ukraine to achieve climate neutrality in 2050, while a number of areas corresponding to the European Green Deal are being introduced in Ukraine.
