CEO of LLC Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) Serhiy Makogon says Moldova will store gas in Ukrainian underground storage facilities (USFs).

The first supplies have already started. It is planned to inject about 100 million cubic meters of natural gas into the USFs in October-November 2020, he wrote on Facebook on October 2, referring to Moldovagaz.

"We started actively working on the issue of creating a gas reserve for Moldova in Ukraine back in the summer of 2019, when there was uncertainty about continued [gas] transit via Ukraine. Such stocks guarantee Moldova's energy security and reduce dependence on a single gas supplier," he added.

Makogon earlier said the Ukrainian underground storage facilities in 2020 might take additional 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from European companies for storage.

  • Twelve underground gas storages with a total storage capacity of about 31 bcm are being operated in Ukraine.
  • In the past decade, Ukraine uses only 50-60% of its storage capacity.
  • The five largest Ukrainian underground storage facilities are located in the country's west, some 160 km off Hungary border.
