Ukraine's CPI in May 2020 slows to 1.7%

Ukraine's Consumer Price Index (CPI) slowed to 1.7% in May 2020 year-over-year (y-o-y) from 2.1% in April 2020.

Consumer prices in May 2020 rose by a mere 0.3% compared to April 2020, according to the country's State Statistics Service.

Since the beginning of the year, they have grown by 1.8%, it said.

In May 2020, prices of fruit grew most (34.8% y-o-y), while prices of alcohol and tobacco increased by 11.6%. Tariffs on the water supply rose by 25.1% and those on sewage by 21.4%. Education services also became more expensive (13.5%).

The steepest price decline in May 2020 was recorded in the fuel and energy sector – prices of natural gas plunged by 53.5% and those of fuel and lubricants slid by 28.2%. Prices of vegetables decreased by 21.3%. Tariffs on hot water and heating dropped by 13.2%. Prices of footwear declined by 4.8%.

The State Statistics Service recalled its reports excluded data from Russia-occupied territories, namely Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the National Bank of Ukraine raised its inflation forecast for 2020 to 6% from the 4.8% projected earlier, which remained within the benchmark set at 5% +/- 1 pp.

Inflation in Ukraine in 2019 slowed to 4.1%, which is the country's six-year low figure.
