Chief Executive Officer of Dragon Capital, President of the European Business Association Tomas Fiala has mentioned possible candidates for the post of the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) after its chief, Yakiv Smolii, tendered his resignation on July 1.

Among them are ex-Minister of Economy Tymofiy Milovanov and former head of the Board at Raiffeisen Bank Aval Volodymyr Lavrenchuk.

"I know Milovanov, Lavrenchuk. They have a very good reputation in the market. It would be good if they are appointed," Fiala said during a video conference on July 2 while commenting on possible candidates. "These names are clear to investors, and they will pursue a conservative monetary policy, which is necessary to keep, in the first instance, inflation low and maintain interest rates."

Media also reported that, in addition to Milovanov and Lavrenchuk, Ukrgasbank Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko may also apply for the position.

Yet, Fiala said, Smolii's resignation sends a negative signal to the market. "The only thing is that even with such a replacement there is a negative aftertaste, because the newly appointed governor of the board, who is appointed for seven years and should be independent, faces a precedent that he could be forced to resign after a phone call from Bankova [the street in Kyiv where the Office of the President is located] if Bankova dislikes something in the National Bank's independence," he said.

According to the media outlet NV, former Finance Minister Ihor Umansky may also apply for the NBU head's post. Other potential candidates named by the media are incumbent member of the NBU Board Olena Shcherbakova, Chairman of the NBU Council Bohdan Danylyshyn, and ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
