New rules for the supply of natural gas have been enforced in Ukraine.
Now household consumer may independently select their gas supplier. A similar scheme has long been applied in Europe, but experts can't tell whether it will take root in Ukraine, as reported by TSN.ua.
The law on the natural gas market has fully started operating in Ukraine since August 1. Lawmakers passed it five years ago, but only now did people receive an opportunity to independently select their gas supplier.
"These supply companies will try to attract clients and provide better conditions for supply. For example, if you are at work during daytime, they may offer you a package with no supplies during your work hours," said Director of the City Institute analytical research center Oleksandr Serhienko.

He assures today it is not difficult to find a gas supplier. There are about 500 of them in Ukraine. However, only 50 companies actually render the relevant services.
If someone selects one of the companies, they need to sign a relevant application. In addition, a potential supplier must inform within three days whether it agrees to sell gas. If everything goes well, paperwork gets submitted.
"This is ownership papers for an apartment, or a plant, or a company. Also, the technical passport for the premises. Third, if this is an individual, they need to submit their passport and an ID code," Serhienko said.
If Ukrainians don't change their gas supplier now, they will still have to do that in the future.
Experts reassure gas prices are likely to go down due to the warm winter and fuel leftovers in storage facilities. Competition in the gas supply market will also contribute to this end. The thing is that companies will offer more favorable conditions to win over as many consumers as possible.
