Statistics service reports on food price hikes in Ukraine in 2020

Prices of vegetables slumped significantly last year.

Ukraine's State Statistics Service has published a rating of the most expensive and cheapest food products in 2020.

That is according to the Ukrainian TSN TV news service, referring to the agency's data on January 19.

However, prices of vegetables slumped significantly last year.

The price of the borsch set, which includes onions, beets, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, and potatoes, dropped the most in 2020. In particular, prices of onions fell by 42%, those of potatoes by 25%, cabbage prices were almost 25% down, while prices of beets and carrots declined by 17% and 6%, respectively.

  • It was earlier reported that prices of sugar and buckwheat skyrocketed by 50% and 35%, respectively, in Ukrainian markets and shops in 2020.
  • Experts attribute the price hikes to a decline in domestic sugar production. Also, last year's drought affected the sugar beet harvest.
