Some 62% of restaurants shut down in Ukraine amid COVID-19 quarantine

Some 62% of restaurants in Ukraine have been shut down amid the quarantine set by the government over the spread of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus across the country.

During the first (zero) week of the quarantine (March 17-22), some 99% of catering establishments were operating in Ukraine. However, their share had gradually decreased to 38% by the end of the fifth week, as of April 19, the press service of OpenDataBot, a business data registration monitoring service, reported on April 21, referring to data by Poster, a POS app solution provider.

At the same time, sales of catering outlets in Ukraine during the quarantine period shrank by 73% compared to the beginning of March.

As UNIAN reported earlier, over 160,000 employees of restaurants and cafes in Ukraine lost their jobs over the coronavirus quarantine, according to OpenDataBot.

The Cabinet of Ministers on March 11 decided to introduce quarantine in Ukraine until April 3 over the spread of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus, which was later extended until April 24 and further until May 11.

Catering establishments (restaurants and cafes), shopping and entertainment centers, other entertainment facilities, fitness centers, and cultural institutions temporarily suspended their operation from March 17 for the quarantine period, while pharmacies, grocery stores, household goods stores, as well as restaurants (only in delivery mode) were allowed to provide their services.
