Deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in nine months shrinks by 60%

The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in January-September 2020 amounted to US$2.944 billion, which was 60% down year-over-year (US$7.204 billion).

Exports of goods from Ukraine during the period under review decreased by 5.6% to US$35.01 billion, while imports fell by 14.3%, to US$37.962 billion, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine said on its website.

The ratio of coverage of imports by exports was 0.92 (0.84 in January-September 2019).

China became the largest trading partner of Ukraine in the nine months. Exports of goods to China increased by 86.1%, to US$4.814 billion, while imports from China fell by 12.4%, to US$5.793 billion.

Poland was the next largest trading partner of Ukraine, as exports of goods to that country amounted to US$2.33 billion, having decreased by 8%. Imports decreased by 4.4%, to US$2.87 billion.

In general, exports of goods from Ukraine to the EU countries in the nine months decreased by 16.3%, to US$13.06 billion, while imports of goods from the EU countries decreased by 10.5%, to US$16.44 billion.

  • Ukraine's deficit of foreign trade in January-August 2020 was estimated at US$2.399 billion, which was 60% down on the deficit for the same period in 2019 (US$5.915 billion).
  • According to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine's deficit of foreign trade in 2019 stood at US$3.633 billion, which was 41.2% down on 2018. In particular, the deficit of foreign trade in goods in 2019 increased by 8.8%, to US$10.723 billion.
