Ukraine climbs to 13th place in steelmakers' ranking in Nov

The country in January-November 2020 reduced output by 3% y-o-y.

Ukrainian steelmakers boosted steel production by 30.8% in November 2020 year-over-year (y-o-y), to 1.73 million tonnes, having risen from the 14th to the 13th spot in the international steelmakers ranking drawn up by the World Steel Association (WSA).

Over the period under review, China remained at the top of the ranking with 87.7 million tonnes (8% up y-o-y), the WSA's press service reported on December 22.

China is followed by:

  • India (9.2 million tonnes, 3.5% up);
  • Japan (7.3 million tonnes, 5.9% down);
  • The United States (6.12 million tonnes, 13.7% down);
  • Russia (5.9 million tonnes, 1.9% up);
  • South Korea (5.8 million tonnes, 2.4% down);
  • Vietnam (4.1 million tonnes, 166.7% up);
  • Germany (3.4 million tonnes, 14.8% up);
  • Turkey (3.2 million tonnes, 11.6% up);
  • Brazil (2.9 million tonnes, 11.2% up), and
  • Iran (2.6 million tonnes, 14.1% up).

In total, the 64 countries ranked by the WSA increased steel output by 6.6% in November 2020 y-o-y, to 158 million tonnes.

Ukraine in January-November 2020 slashed steel production by 3% y-o-y, to 18.7 million tonnes.

All the 64 countries ranked by the WSA in the 11 months of 2020 saw a 1.3% decline in their output y-o-y, having produced 1.67 billion tonnes of steel.

Background

Ukrainian steelmakers in 2019 reduced steel output against 2018 by 1.2%, to 20.8 million tonnes, having retained the 13th place in the WSA's ranking.
