Ukraine gov't seeks to provide high-speed internet to 95% of Ukrainians

The deputy minister specified no deadlines for the plan implementation.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation plans to make available high-quality high-speed internet for 95% of the country's population.

In this context, special focus will be put on connecting to the world wide web social infrastructure facilities across country, says Deputy Digital Transformation Minister for the Development of Digital Infrastructure Oleksandr Shelest.

"Our goal is to ensure accessibility for 95% of the population," Shelest told a briefing following a government meeting. "The plan is based primarily on connecting to the net our social infrastructure facilities, such as schools, kindergartens, and so on."

The deputy minister specified no deadlines for the plan implementation.

He also said that the Ministry of Digital Development intends to connect all social infrastructure facilities to high-speed Internet in the coming years.

Besides, Shelest says, special attention will be paid to the development of optical internet in rural areas.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a study by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, 452 hospitals across Ukraine (25.74% of all hospitals in the country) have no internet connection.

According to other studies by the Ministry of Digital Science, about 92% of Ukrainian libraries and 40% of schools have no high-quality internet connection. According to the State Statistics Service, 70.1% of the population (more than 26.9 million people) used the internet in 2019, of which more than 77% used the internet at least once a day.
