Head of the All-Ukrainian Congress of Farmers Ivan Slobodianyk says more than 10 agricultural associations have appealed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to prevent the introduction of quotas for imports of mineral fertilizers.

"Only his intervention can save the agricultural sector and citizens from increased production costs and foodstuff price hikes. ... Therefore, we handed over to the president a letter signed by over 10 associations, were we reasserted our stance [on preventing the introduction of quotas]," he said at a briefing on May 28 following a meeting with representatives of the Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture.

Slobodianyk added that if the government within a month fails to satisfy their demands, protests would start across country.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on May 28, Ukrainian farmers held a rally outside Government HQ in Kyiv demanding that the Cabinet drop the idea of such quotas.

Last week, the economy ministry announced plans to introduce a 30 % quota for imports of nitrogen fertilizers. Agrarian associations opposed such a decision, fearing a rise in fertilizer prices due to monopolization of the market by domestic producers.
