Ukrainian labor migrants' remittances shrink by 13.2% in April – NBU

Private remittances to Ukraine in January-April grew by 2.4%, to US$3.7 billion y-o-y.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) says remittances from Ukrainian labor migrants in April 2020 shrank by 13.2% year-over-year (y-o-y), to US$826 million, and by 20.3% from February 2020.

Private remittances to Ukraine in January-April grew by 2.4%, to US$3.7 billion y-o-y, the regulator said on its website on June 24.

In particular, money transfers through informal channels amounted to US$1.6 billion (43.1% of the total number of remittances), US$1.4 billion (37.7%) through bank contra accounts, and US$0.7 billion (19.2%) via international payment systems.

Labor migrants' remittances to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2020 totaled US$2.9 billion, including US$991 million in January, US$994 million in February, and US$922 million in March.

In total, Ukrainian labor migrants transferred US$12 billion to the country in 2019, the NBU added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the National Bank predicted a decline in remittances from Ukrainian labor migrants in 2020 due to a lockdown introduced in the country over the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
