Former Social Policy Minister Andriy Reva estimates that if 9% unemployment was recorded in the country early in 2020, then this figure must be double now.

"If we have from 1.5 million to 1.7 million unemployed people – this is according to the methodology of the International Labor Organization, this means that this is 9% unemployment," he said, according to Channel 5. "If today there are about 3 million, then this figure can be multiplied by two. This is 15-16%, up to 18% of the active population are unemployed. This is a huge figure, "the expert said.

"From autumn, when the field works end, we will also have seasonal unemployment, this problem will become very acute. Especially in autumn and winter," he added.

Ukraine's Central Bank forecasts the unemployment rate in Ukraine in 2020 may be as high as 10%.

The number of unemployed in Ukraine has increased rapidly for three months of quarantine, which, in particular, has affected the level of wages, media said. The main causes behind the spike in unemployment are the closure of businesses, staff reductions, and the massive return of labor migrants to Ukraine.

Journalists emphasize that the large number of unemployed is conducive to high competition for jobs. This allows employers to overestimate the requirements for potential employees and "reduce the cost" of vacancies, which significantly lowers the level of salaries.

"Ukraine is not the only state that has recorded rising unemployment. This is a global trend. Europe, the largest importer of Ukrainian labor resources, has also faced it. Many European companies have to dismiss employees and lay off, in particular, Ukrainian workers," the journalists said.
