Verkhovna Rada's Committee elaborates on unemployment in Ukraine

Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Social Policy and Social Protection of Veterans Rights says the growth in the number of unemployed in Ukraine has slowed down as 97,000 people received the status of unemployed in May and 75,000 citizens in June 2020.

Some 253,500 people were employed, including 175,000 unemployed, from March to July 2020, the report said.

Most Ukrainians found a new job in agriculture sector, namely 45% of the total number of applicants, followed by the processing industry (14%), and trade sector (13%).

The government and the State Employment Service have developed an algorithm to support small- and medium-sized businesses to preserve jobs.

"Entrepreneurs who had reduced or ceased their activities could apply for partial unemployment benefits. This gave the opportunity to make payments and save jobs of 366,000 citizens," the press service added.

Background

On August 19, 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers offered to keep the program related to assistance on partial unemployment after the end of the coronavirus-related quarantine.
