Number of unemployed grows by 159,000 on year

The number of officially unemployed citizens in Ukraine rose by 159,000 year-on-year, according to the State Employment Center.

This is a 59% increase on year, the agency said in response to RFE/RL's inquiry, Censor.net reports.

Since quarantine start on March 12 and up to October 9, some 525,000 citizens have been registered as unemployed.

"The most significant increase in the number of unemployed was observed in Kyiv, Odesa, Zakarpattia, and Lviv regions, as well as the City of Kyiv (by 1.8 -2.8 times). At the same time, in Luhansk, Sumy, Dnepropetrovsk, Cherkasy, and Vinnytsia regions, the number of unemployed increased by 32-38%," the report reads.

At the same time, nearly 342,000 citizens found jobs with the Employment Center's assistance over the reporting period.

"As of October 12, it's six applicants per vacancy (three in 2019)," the State Employment Center concludes.
