The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will adopt amendments to the Constitution on the decentralization of power in autumn this year, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Hroisman said at a briefing on Monday, according to Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda.
He said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had set up a constitutional commission that will work out, with the help of experts, a basic text of amendments to the Constitution to achieve decentralization, and protect the rights of local communities.
"After that, we will create a temporary special committee of the Verkhovna Rada on this issue that will finalize the text and submit it to the session hall," he said.
"The most important thing is that we have to make all of the necessary changes for decentralization and [to increase the powers of] local government by October 2015, as the next elections should be held on a new basis," Hroisman said.
