Culture Committee's head vows law on national minorities' languages to be adopted in six months

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Culture Committee Mykola Kniazhytsky promises the law on the protection of languages of national minorities and indigenous peoples will be adopted in six months.

"The law needs to be adopted, and we promise you this [will happen] in six months – the legislation on the protection of languages of national minorities and indigenous peoples. We will do everything so that these people who live in Ukraine, so that all citizens feel at home," he said at a parliament meeting before the adoption of the draft law on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the national language, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

Kniazhytsky said the relevant law "being fair to Ukrainians, in no way demeans any national minorities."

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on April 25 adopted the draft law on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the national language.

Some 278 Members of Parliament backed the decision.
