Ukrainian doctors are not allowed to visit jailed Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko because they could give medical reasons for changing the conditions in which she is held, Mark Feygin, Savchenko’s lawyer, said on Ukraine’s Hromadske.TV channel on Wednesday.
According to Feygin, the criminal procedure legislation of the Russian Federation provides that if the state of health of the accused deteriorates, and if it falls among the list of diseases that are incompatible with detention, the preventive measure have to be changed.
"The investigators think that Ukrainian doctors will come and draw conclusions about some acute pancreatitis, which is on the list... And then, based on these conclusions, we, as lawyers, have the right to apply directly to the court and demand a change in the measure of restraint,” Feygin said.
“That's why before each hearing the doctors gave a certificate of good health, so that the lawyers aren’t able to appeal [against the conditions of Savchenko’s detention] on medical grounds."
As reported earlier, on Wednesday Savchenko said that if by the end of the week Ukrainian doctors were not allowed to visit her and advise her on her recovery from her hunger strike, she would begin her hunger strike again. Savchenko said that the prison doctors were introducing new products, which she could not always eat and which had led to acute pancreatitis.
