The world can talk now about a certain degree of ‘frozen conflict’ in eastern Ukraine, but not about the intensification of sanctions against Russia, Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said in Brussels on Monday, according to Ukrainian newspaper Europeiska Pravda.
According to Schetyna, over the last weeks nothing has happened that could cause there to be calls to tighten sanctions, Ukrainian newspaper Ukrainska Pravda has reported.
"Nothing has happened, so that we could talk about the intensification of sanctions. The last such a difficult situation was the attack on Mariupol," he said.
"Now it seems that the conflict is frozen, and we have to respond flexibly to this situation. It is not necessary to radicalize it," Schetyna said.
"For today, the EU countries have faced an issue of extending the existing sanctions, which is to be considered at the summit of the EU leaders this week," he said.
"The key to the extension of sanctions is a common position of all countries," Schetyna said.
"As for the resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, I think that we must look for new formats, in particular the Geneva one. I believe that U.S. participation would be effective," he said.
"The thing is that we must use the most effective means for the resolution of the conflict. The implementation of the Minsk agreements is important, but we need to look for another format, more efficient than the Normandy format. And it is a challenge for those who are currently engaged in talks with Russia for a peaceful resolution of the Donbas conflict," Schetyna said.
