Russia uses snap drills to increase forces in Crimea and Kaliningrad

Russian forces stationed in Crimea and in the Kaliningrad special district will be reinforced during a snap inspection of the combat readiness of the Russian armed forces, General of the National Control Defense Centre of the Russian Federation, Major-General Yevgeniy Sokolov, said on Thursday, according to the Crimean news agency Krym.Realii.

"In accordance with the schedule of the military exercises carried out in the framework of a snap inspection of the combat readiness of the Russian armed forces, we planned to strengthen our groups of troops in the Crimean peninsula and the Kaliningrad special district," he said.

According to Sokolov, ten aircraft will be redeployed to Crimea, and the Iskander tactical mobile ballistic missile system will be sent to Kaliningrad region.

"A total of 43 ships and six submarines are now involved in the exercises, while 144 combat aircraft and helicopters are located at forward airfields," he said.

As reported earlier, Russia began military exercises from the Baltic Sea to Sakhalin. On Monday, March 16, an unscheduled inspection of the combat readiness began in the Northern Fleet.
