Poroshenko orders Defense Ministry not to make arms contracts public

The Ukrainian government has forbidden the Ministry of Defense to disclose details of contracts for the supply of arms, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday at a meeting with battalion commanders, according to Radio Liberty.

According to Poroshenko, such information could be of benefit to the enemy.

During the meeting Poroshenko interrupted Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, who was about to answer a journalist’s question regarding the supply of arms.

"Cameras are working here. I'm not going to report to the enemy and the aggressor about what contracts we have signed. I can tell you only the relative position. As of today, we have signed 70% of the agreements, which are scheduled for the whole year," Poroshenko said.

He also said that Poltorak had been provided with 100% of the funding required for previous agreements.

According to Poroshenko, this information is contained in the state defense order, which is a top secret document.

"To comment it or to go into details - I forbid this," the president said.

As reported earlier, on March 18 Poltorak said that Ukraine had signed 100 agreements for the purchase, modernization and maintenance of military equipment.
