Shokin explains difficulties in ‘getting’ Yanukovych and Co.

There are certain obstacles to bringing to justice former officials from the regime of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych who have fled the country, Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin said on Ukrainian Inter TV Channel on Sunday, according to Ukrainian newspaper Ukrainska Pravda.

Asked whether there was a realistic opportunity to prosecute in Ukraine the runaway officials and Yanukovych himself, Shokin said that unfortunately this issue involved a lot of difficulties.

"The first problem is that they have taken the citizenship of other states, including that of Russia. There are some countries with which we haven’t extradition treaties. Moreover, Russia does not extradite its citizens. So, we have some problems," Shokin said.

"But despite this, we will take all measures prescribed by law so that those people, citizens of Ukraine or not, who have committed crimes on the territory of Ukraine, and if it is proven, (and this will be proved), that their actions were criminal, I will do everything possible so that they are punished in accordance with the law of Ukraine," Shokin said.
