Russian occupiers set limits on use of water from Crimean wells

Russia’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, an occupation authority on the annexed Ukrainian territory of Crimea, is planning to set limits on water extraction on every well on the peninsula, the observance of which will be monitored by a meter, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Crimea Hennadiy Naraev said on Tuesday, according to local publication Novosti Kryma.

According to Naraev, the regulation of water extraction in small wells located in private households will be very difficult, but officials are ready for the task.

"Taking into account the shortage of water in the Crimea, we should oblige everyone to install meters. Our experts will determine how much water you can get, and these limits can’t be exceeded. The limit will be determined for each well. This is a very daunting task, [and] it will take a long time," he said.

According to environmentalists, well boring in Crimea would solve the problem of water supply only for 2-3 years and lead to soil salinization in the northern and central parts of the peninsula.
