Venice Commission ‘doesn’t approve of lustration, but recognizes Ukraine’s right to do it’

"In general, the Venice Commission does not really like lustration [either], in Ukraine or in other countries. But it has said a very important thing in its conclusions – the Venice Commission does not like our lustration [efforts], but they recognize that Ukraine has the right to do it," Yemets said.

As reported earlier, when speaking about the law "On cleansing power" (lustration), President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio said that the law was "bad", and the Venice Commission was very critical in its assessment of the legislation.

"But we have come to a joint opinion in discussions with your representatives, the justice minister, and agreed to work together on finalizing and bringing this law into line with European standards," Buquicchio said.
