Poroshenko urges European Parliament to support Ukraine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has urged the European Parliament (EP) to endorse the European Commission's proposal concerning the introduction of autonomous trade measures for Ukraine to promote further diversification of Ukrainian exports amid economic pressure from Russia, according to the president's press service.

Poroshenko raised this issue in a telephone conversation with newly elected EP President Antonio Tajani, the press service reported.

He also congratulated Tajani on his new position.

Further, Poroshenko expressed hope that the European Parliament would continue strong support of Ukraine in its determination to restore territorial integrity and deepen relations with the EU.

Poroshenko thanked the European Parliament for its policy of non-recognition of Russian annexation of Crimea and asked to actively counter repression and human rights violation committed by Russia against Ukrainian citizens, including Crimean Tatars. He also urged to help facilitate the release of all hostages illegally detained in Russia.
