Steven Pifer, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, who is now an expert at the U.S-based Brookings Institution, has expressed doubts about the rationality of holding a referendum in Ukraine on joining NATO and the EU.
"Ukraine Pres[ident] Poroshenko plans to hold referendum on membership in NATO & EU. Not sure that makes sense given lack of support in those organizations now for putting Ukraine on membership track. Better course = deepen practical cooperation," Pifer wrote on Twitter on December 1, 2017.
As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced referendums on membership in NATO and the EU in the "foreseeable future."
