Ukrainian forces defending Donetsk airport have fought off five attacks by Russian-backed militants in the past 24 hours, National Security and Defense Counciol spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.
Ukrainian forces also went on the offensive, destroying enemy positions near the airport’s ruined control tower, Lysenko said.
"The defenders of the airport, along with units providing covering fire, launched a raid involving armored vehicles and destroyed the fortified positions of the terrorists in the area of the control tower of the airport,” he said.
“The enemy suffered losses."
Elsewhere in Donetsk region, insurgents over the last day have attacked Ukrainian army positions near Avdiyivka, Krasnohorivka and the village of Piske, Lysenko reported.
