Tombiński: Ukraine not yet ready for visa-free regime with EU

Ukraine is not yet ready for the introduction of a visa-free regime with the European Union, but could be by the time of the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga next May, head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombiński told journalists on Thursday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UAA1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Promises should not be made about the issue of liberalization of the visa regime, but it is important to say what has been done to be ready for the introduction of [such a] regime," Tombiński said.

"In March 2014 we heard claims that by the end of the year Ukraine would fulfill all of the conditions and would be ready for the introduction of a visa-free regime," he said.

"It is almost the end of 2014, but we still haven’t seen all necessary measures being taken to fulfill the conditions so that Ukraine can complete this process.

"Five months are left to the Riga Summit. You should use this time and do everything possible so that European countries are able to say ‘yes’ and agree that everything has been done, everything works..." he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that he agreed with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini that the process of liberalization of the visa regime between Ukraine and the EU would be completed by the summit of the Eastern Partnership countries in Riga in May 2015.
