The State Border Service of Ukraine has received the first UAH 10 million in funding for a massive fortification project nicknamed the “Great Wall of Ukraine” on the Russian-Ukrainian border in Kharkiv region, Oleh Slobodian, the assistant chairman of the Ukrainian State Border Service, said at a briefing on Friday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

"According to our estimates, the first tranche of UAH 10 million for engineering work on the border has already transferred to the administration of the State Border Service. This will allow the continuing of the implementation of the engineering plan after the completion of all legal and technological issues," Slobodian said.

"The project will involve only Ukrainian companies and producers, and therefore about 40% of the funds will return to the budget as taxes," Slobodian said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on March 18 Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine had decided to allocate UAH 865 million from the reserve fund for the construction of the security measures on the border.

According to the State Border Service, the engineering works on the borders with Russia will start in Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv regions and part of Luhansk region.
