COVID-19 in Ukraine: 14, incl. two babies, test positive; second death confirmed

Seven new cases were confirmed on Tuesday alone.

Fourteen Ukrainians have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to the Ukrainian Health Ministry's Public Health Center.

Two of the confirmed cases are deaths from COVID-19, the center said in a Facebook update as of 20:00 Kyiv time on March 17.

"According to the virological reference laboratory of Ukraine's Public Health Center, 14 tested positive for COVID-19: Chernivtsi region (10), Zhytomyr region (1), Kyiv region (1), and the city of Kyiv (2)," it said.

In particular, a 44-year-old man who came from abroad was tested positive in Kyiv region and six persons – a 33-year-old woman (a second death from COVID-19), individuals aged 31, 10, 18, two babies (22 months and six months old) were tested positive in Chernivtsi region on Tuesday alone.

"All of them have been in contact with a previously confirmed case," it said.

The laboratory checks not only suspected cases, but also established contacts.

In total, more than 640 samples have already been examined.

"Most of people who are affected by the novel coronavirus experience it as the common acute respiratory syndrome. Actually, this disease is a kind of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), but it is caused by a previously unknown pathogen," the center said.

In particular, the World Health Organization estimates the death rate from COVID-19 at 3.4%.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry says that 96.6% of COVID-19 cases will not be fatal.

Ukraine's first death from the new coronavirus (a 71-year-old woman in Zhytomyr region) was reported on March 13.
