It restores our national dignity, he said
Victor Yushchenko has told reporters yesterday’s parliamentary vote in favor of declaring the Holodomor an act of genocide against Ukrainians is historic, according to the President`s press-office.
“I would like to emphasize this: the vote is historic. It does not target anyone. It restores our national dignity. We will renew our memory of those ten million innocent victims killed in 1932-1933,” he said, adding that it also helped restore historical justice.
“I bow my head to thank political leaders, prominent national leaders and all those who contributed to the bill and its passage,” he said, expressing gratitude to VR Speaker Oleksandr Moroz, heads of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, the Our Ukraine Bloc and the Socialist Party, and deputies of other factions who “had the courage and felt the obligation to adopt this bill.”
He said he was sad some lawmakers were not brave enough to recognize the Soviet-era famine as genocide.
“In my opinion, these are the remains of the totalitarian system,” he said.
Mr. Yushchenko expressed confidence the clause to impose fines on those who deny the Holodomor would reappear in the law.
The President signed the Holodomor Law today.
