Ronaldo struck by bizarre injury

Ronaldo was making his return

Brazilian striker Ronaldo came through his first competitive game for 13 months in one piece, but was injured by a microphone as he left the pitch, according to BBC.

The 32-year-old made his debut for Corinthians as a 68th-minute substitute in the 2-0 win over Itumbiara.

But Ronaldo was left with a badly bruised and swollen right eye after being struck by a microphone when a post-match media scrum surrounded him.

Ronaldo was making his return from a third career-threatening knee injury.

The three-time Fifa world player of the year ruptured a tendon in his left knee playing for AC Milan against Livorno in February 2008.

He later left the Italian club before joining Brazilian club Corinthians in December in a surprise move.

Ronaldo has battled weight problems and trained for three months to reach match fitness but, wearing his favourite number nine shirt, he only had a few touches of the ball in an unspectacular debut.

"He had a good debut, moved well and tried a few dribbles," Corinthians coach Mano Menezes told reporters.

Ronaldo, who has 97 caps and 62 goals for Brazil, was involved in another off-field controversy last week when he was fined by the club for arriving late at the team hotel after a day off.
