The crisis in eastern Ukraine cannot be resolved by capitulating to aggression, new President of the European Council Donald Tusk has told Polish journalists, Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda has reported, referring to Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
According to Tusk, there are good reasons to believe that the conflict in Ukraine can at least be localised
"There are a number of reasons - very subtle ones - to conclude that it is possible to resolve the conflict [in Ukraine], which would ensure, at least, the limitation of the scale of the crisis, and we will work on it," Tusk said.
At the same time, according to Tusk, peace in the world cannot be maintained to the detriment of Ukraine’s interests.
"We all want peace and stabilization in the east, but it should not be a peace at the expense of Ukraine, concessions, or surrender to an aggressive policy," he said.
Tusk also added that presently he has no plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Tusk became the President of the European Council on December 1, 2014.
