Russia may ban hundreds of thousands of foreigners from entering the country for 10 years, the head of the Federal Migration Service of Russia Konstantin Romodanovskiy said on Thursday, according to Russian radio station Echo of Moscow.
"The reason for the ban on entry is the violation by foreigners of the period of legal residence in the Russian Federation," he said.
"This Saturday new amendments to the legislation will come into force,” Romodanovskiy said.
“According to the Russian Federal Migration Service, nearly three million foreign nationals who are now in Russia have already exceeded the legal term of stay - 90 days.
“If the excess amounts to 120 days, their entry will be closed for three years. If the excess amounts to 270 days, their entry will be closed for five years. And finally, if they have stayed illegally more than 360 days, they will be banned [from entering Russia] for 10 years,"
