British Prime Minister David Cameron on Sunday called on the leaders of the British intelligence services to step up their measures against foreign agents on the streets of London in order to combat a potential threat to national security.
British counterintelligence (MI5) plans to intensify its activities in searching for and monitoring the employees of the Russian special services operating in the UK in the wake of Cameron’s call, Russian news agency RIA Novosti has reported, quoting UK newspaper The Times.
"A senior source in the security services said there had been a change in policy toward Russian spies operating in the country. The heads of MI5 and MI6 were ordered to increase surveillance of agents on the streets of London," the newspaper wrote.
It has also been reported in the newspaper that the ministers were ordered to put in place security measures "via direct actions" against spies, and the pilots of Russian bombers "violating UK airspace."
