Ukraine's parliament votes to raise duty on scrap metal exports to EUR 42 per tonne

The lawmakers extended the period when the duty will be in effect until September 2019.

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on May 17 voted to raise the duty on scrap metal exports to EUR 42 per tonne from EUR 30 per tonne.

Respective bill No. 8226 amending some laws of Ukraine to reduce a deficit of ferrous scrap metal on the domestic market passed its first reading with 248 lawmakers' votes in its favor. The required minimum is 226 votes.

What is more, the lawmakers extended the period when the duty will be in effect until September 2019.

Leader of the Radical Party of Ukraine Oleh Liashko and other members of his party are among the authors of the bill.

Presenting the document in parliament, head of the parliament's industrial policy and entrepreneurs committee Viktor Halasiuk said that the previous rate set at EUR 30 "failed to perform a safeguarding function."

"The situation on world markets is getting worse. Prices of scrap metal are rising. Therefore, it is proposed raising this duty to 42 euros per tonne," he said, adding that the budgetary effect of this bill exceeded EUR 1 billion per year.
