Ukraine slides to 14th place in world steelmakers' rating in May

The rating incorporates 64 countries.

Ukrainian steelmakers boosted steel output by 2.9% in May 2018 year-over-year, to 1.695 million tonnes, but the country slid to 14th from 13th place in the rating of the World Steel Association (WSA).

From January to May 2018, Ukraine increased steel output by 0.4% year-over-year, to 8.68 million tonnes, keeping its 13th place in the WSA rating.

China was traditionally in the lead in the May rating with 81.127 million tonnes of steel (an increase by 8.9% from May 2017). Other top ten countries were as follows: Japan (9.093 million tonnes, +1.8%), India (8.822 million tonnes, +7.6%), the United States (7.107 million tonnes, +3%), Russia (6.23 million tonnes, +6%), South Korea (6.227 million tonnes, +3%), Germany (3.9 million tonnes, +2.6%), Turkey (3.325 million tonnes, +0.5%), and Brazil (2.678 million tonnes, -8.6%).

All the 64 countries included in the WSA rating increased steel production by 6.6% in May 2018 year-over-year, to 154.856 million tonnes.

In January-May, China continued to be in the lead in January-May 2018 with 369.859 million tonnes (an increase by 5.4% compared to the same period in 2017). It is followed by Japan (44.217 million tonnes, +0.7%), India (44.123 million tonnes, +4.7%), the United States (34.846 million tonnes, +2.8%), Russia (30.027 million tonnes, +2%), South Korea (29.94 million tonnes, +3.7%), Germany (18.685 million tonnes, +0.4%), Turkey (15.85 million tonnes, 4.3%), and Brazil (14,272 million tonnes, + 1.4%).

The 64 countries included in the WSA rating increased steel production in general by 4.3% in the first five months of 2018 from the same period of 2017, to 729.216 million tonnes.

As UNIAN reported, Ukraine in 2017 slid to 12th place, reducing steel production by 6.4% compared to 2016, to 22.7 million tonnes.
