Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has vetoed the bill recently adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on combatting timber smuggling from Ukraine.

The president supports toughening criminal liability for timber smuggling, at the same time opposing lobbying schemes that violate the terms of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement (DCFTA) with the European Union, according to the Presidential Administration's press service.

The norms greenlighting the said schemes were introduced into the bill's text "between the first and second readings," the Administration says, "in particular norms contradicting the DCFTA with the EU."
