"Some 4,000 kilometers [of roads] have been repaired this year. This is a large figure. Interim or major overhauls of roads in Ukraine cost about UAH 10 million per kilometer, which is a record low amount compared to any neighboring states," the Ukrainian news outlet Ukrayinska Pravda quoted Omelyan as saying on August 27.

According to the minister, the construction of a highway in Bulgaria is the cheapest in the European Union, that is EUR 3 million per kilometer, while in Poland it costs from EUR 5 million to EUR 7 million.

Omelyan says that Ukraine manages to save on low-paid labor and raw materials.

According to the State Road Agency of Ukraine, Ukravtodor, over 2,000 kilometers of roads were repaired and built in Ukraine in 2017, which was twice up on 2016.

The agency says UAH 2 trillion ($71.7 billion) is needed for major overhauls of roads across Ukraine.

As UNIAN reported earlier, UAH 44 billion ($1.6 billion) was set aside in the national budget for 2018, including UAH 32.6 billion ($1.2 billion) in the State Road Fund's budget.
