Ukrainian government agencies targeted in another cyber attack – SBU

The hackers used software that allowed them to monitor users, copy files, and intercept passwords.

The Security Service of Ukraine has reported a new cyber attack on government agencies, according to the SBU press center.

"Our experts recorded a new targeted attack on information and telecommunication systems of Ukraine's state agencies. The hackers used new types of malicious software, able to remotely administer operating system processes and copying files, monitor user actions, and intercept passwords," the report says.

Thus, according to the investigation conducted by experts of the security service in cooperation with a highly-acclaimed anti-virus company, it was established that these computer viruses are updated versions of Backdoor Industroyer.

“They have a number of similar characteristics, in particular, they use similar fragments of software code, deployment procedures, use of computational capabilities of infected systems, etc. In addition, the use of certain tools was spotted belonging to this hacker group, which were discovered during the investigation of previous cyber attacks,” added the security agency press service.

According to the report, the Security Service of Ukraine has established the targets of the cyber attack, as well as assisted in localizing and minimizing its consequences for the IT infrastructures of public authorities.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Russia will be actively meddling in the electoral process in Ukraine, through various means, ranging from disinformation to cyber attacks, according to President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
